These red velvet crinkle cookies are soft, fudgy, and perfectly festive for Valentine’s Day. Made with simple ingredients and no chilling required, they come together in about 30 minutes for a crowd-pleasing treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups (190g) all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup (20g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (1 stick, 113g) unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon red gel food coloring (or more to desired color)
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • ½ cup (60g) powdered sugar, for rolling

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until no lumps remain.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until combined.
  5. Add the red gel food coloring and white vinegar. Beat on low speed until the color is evenly distributed. Scrape the bowl again.
  6. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients in two additions, mixing on low speed just until the flour disappears. Do not overmix. The dough will be soft and slightly sticky.
  7. Place the powdered sugar in a small bowl. Using a cookie scoop or spoon, portion out about 1.5 tablespoons of dough. Roll into a ball between your palms. Drop the dough ball into the powdered sugar and roll until completely coated.
  8. Place the sugar-coated dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes. The cookies will look puffed and cracked, with set edges and slightly soft centers.
  10. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Notes

For best results, use gel food coloring instead of liquid to avoid adding extra moisture. If you have time, chilling the dough balls for 30 minutes before baking can help them spread less and crack more dramatically. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. These cookies freeze well for up to 3 months.
