A quick and easy Halloween charcuterie board featuring spooky-shaped cheeses, eyeball olives, and monster finger sausages. Perfect for parties, school events, or a fun dinner before trick-or-treating.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces salami or pepperoni
  • 6 ounces prosciutto or ham slices
  • 4–6 hot dogs or smoked sausages
  • 8 ounces cheddar cheese block
  • 6 ounces mozzarella string cheese
  • 4 ounces brie or soft cheese
  • Small spreadable cheese wedges (like The Laughing Cow)
  • 1 cup black olives
  • 1 cup green olives stuffed with pimento
  • 1/2 cup pickles or gherkins
  • 1 cup red grapes
  • 1 box dark rye or pumpernickel crackers
  • 1 box regular crackers or water biscuits
  • 1 small baguette, sliced thin
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate pieces or Halloween-shaped chocolates
  • 1/2 cup dried apricots or figs
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds
  • Optional: candy corn or candy pumpkins

Instructions

  1. Start with the bowls (2 minutes): Place your small bowls or ramekins on the board first. Space them out so they’re not all clustered together. Fill one with black olives (eyeballs), one with green olives (more eyeballs), and one with pickles. Leave room for the other ingredients to spread out around them.
  2. Make the ‘monster fingers’ (5 minutes): Take your hot dogs or smoked sausages and cut them in half crosswise. On the rounded end, use a small knife to cut a tiny slit for a ‘fingernail.’ You can stick a sliver of almond or a small piece of cheese in the slit for a creepy nail effect. Arrange these on one corner of the board, pointing inward like they’re reaching for the cheese.
  3. Cut the cheese shapes (5 minutes): Slice your block cheddar into quarter-inch thick slabs. Use your Halloween cookie cutters to press out shapes—bats, ghosts, pumpkins. Don’t worry if some break; they still taste good. Arrange these in a cluster near the center of the board. For the mozzarella string cheese, cut each stick into three pieces, then cut each piece in half lengthwise to make little ‘bones.’ Place these near the cheddar shapes.
  4. Layer the meats (3 minutes): Fold your salami slices into quarters and arrange them in a small pile. Drape the prosciutto in loose ribbons. Place these near the cheese shapes but not touching—you want some visual separation. If you’re using pepperoni, just pile it up casually.
  5. Add the fruits and sweets (3 minutes): Scatter the red grapes in small clusters around the board—they look like little bloodshot eyeballs. Place the dried apricots or figs in another spot; the wrinkly texture really does look like tiny brains. Add the dark chocolate pieces in a separate area. If you’re using candy corn, sprinkle a small pile near one edge.
  6. Fill in with crackers (2 minutes): Arrange your dark rye or pumpernickel crackers in little groups around the board. Place the regular crackers in another spot. Tuck the sliced baguette pieces into any empty spaces. The dark crackers add to the spooky vibe.
  7. Add the creepy details (2 minutes): Take a few black olives and stick two small toothpick pieces into each one to make ‘spiders.’ Place these on top of the cheese or crackers. For extra effect, use a small piece of red pepper or pimento to make ‘tongues’ on the olive eyeballs. Sprinkle the pumpkin seeds around like little creepy crawlies.
  8. Final check (1 minute): Step back and look at your board. Fill any empty spaces with extra crackers or grapes. Make sure the colors are balanced—you want dark spots (olives, dark crackers), bright spots (cheese, grapes), and everything in between. Serve immediately or cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 4 hours.

Notes

Don’t put crackers directly on wet ingredients like grapes or pickles to avoid sogginess. For a vegetarian version, skip meats and double cheese and veggies. For gluten-free, use gluten-free crackers and skip the baguette. For dairy-free, use dairy-free cheese alternatives and skip brie. The board can be assembled up to 4 hours ahead; add crackers just before serving.
